Dennis T. Mangano, M.D., Ph.D., Founder
Throughout his career, Dr. Mangano has been able to see perplexing scientific and medical issues through a variety of lenses and perspectives, yielding a host of achievements and breakthroughs helpful to humankind. With a doctorate in engineering, math, and physics, he was responsible for developing submarine detection systems (SONAR) software, tested in the North Sea under the auspices of the Office of Naval Research. In his late 20’s, he earned his medical degree in 18 months, and trained in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Critical Care. He has directed intensive care units, and operating rooms specializing in procedures on patients with cardiovascular disease and the assessment of patients with coronary artery disease. In response to the pervasive risk of perioperative ischemia complications and lack of research in the area, Dr. Mangano founded the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation in 1987. Shortly thereafter, in order to build the large-scale research capacity commensurate with the enormity and complexity of perioperative ischemia, he founded the Multicenter Study of Perioperative Ischemia (McSPI) Research Group as a means to conduct high-quality, independent research quickly in a number of sites simultaneously. Dr. Mangano continues today as IREF’s principal scientist, CEO, and member of the Board of Directors.
